HELIGOLAND is the much anticipated fifth studio album from legendary trip-hop duo MASSIVE ATTACK and the first new studio album since 2003's critically-acclaimed 100TH WINDOW. HELIGOLAND features an all-star cast of guest vocals from DAMON ALBARN, HOPE SANDOVAL, MARTINA TOPLEY-BIRD, GUY GARVEY and TUNDE ADEBIMPE. Long time cohort HORACE ANDY makes a return alongside Massive Attack founding members ROBERT DEL NAJA (3D) and GRAND MARSHALL (DADDY G). Damon also plays bass on `Flat Of The Blade' and keyboards on `Splitting The Atom' while PORTISHEAD's ADRIAN UTLEY plays guitar on `Saturday Come Slow'. The band also collaborated with DFA's TIM GOLDSWORTHY on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by ROBERT DEL NAJA. Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including `Trouble In The Water', '44 Inch Chest', `In Prison My Whole Life' and `Gomorra', the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Massive Attack also won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards.
| After my favorite Massive Attack album, the intoxicating "Mezzanine," I was slightly disappointed by "100th Window." I found the album to be, although expertly executed, lacking emotional resonance. Which was odd, especially since it featured tracks with vocals by Sinead O'Connor, who is normally nothing if not emotionally raw. And yet even her tracks fell flat.
Thankfully, Heligoland seems to restore the emotional resonance of Massive Attack's best work. What we have here is a collection of Massive Attack's hypnotic, sexy, underworldly grooves being steered by a variety of interesting and sympathetic voices. In a way, it all sounds like the soundtrack to a movie musical, with different and distinct characters telling their tales, which all fit together into a common story.
Although I'm fond of all the tracks, the one I can't get out of my head is "Psyche," which features beautifully poetic lyrics undersung against a dreamy backgdrop:
"Dissolving who we are/Call out for yesterday's destiny come/We're on a foreign shore" ... gorgeous! |

| | I don't write many reviews, but wanted to make sure that any Massive Attack fan doesn't waste time on this album. It is sadly without any of the energy, creative rhythmic spark, innovative electronic soundscapes, touching lyrics... you name it... that we know & love from Blue Lines, Mezzanine and to a lesser extent from other early M.A. releases. I actually found my self skipping ahead after several minutes of individual tracks, so tedious were the unvarying beats. If anyone reading this has not heard Mezzanine, though, get it. Not just the best M.A. album, but in my opinion, the best album of the 90s. |
| | I love massive attack but this cd was as exciting as drilling a hole in my head. It struggles musically, incoherent babbling and ranting as well as creating a boring tunnel vision atmosphere. This is what i would play if i was driving my car off a large cliff. I dont what these guys were smoking before but they need to start smoking it again or i will never but another one of their albums. If you don't believe me, then waste your money and struggle to find something remotely entertaining in this cd. There is nothing Massive about this one! |

| | Heligoland is a departure for sure from previous works from Massive Attack, and why not. Its obvious. Why would they want to create music that has already been done. It has taken me several or more listens, and well worth the time. The music has successfully gotten under my skin. The more I listen the better it gets. I will be seeing the band in Los Angeles this Thursday. Finally, live!!!! |

| | Sometimes I need to listen to a CD several times before I really understand and like it. At least one previous CD by Massive Attack was that way. I've tried this one several times, though, and I don't like it any better now than the first time. I've seen some good critical reviews, like in Rolling Stone, so maybe I'm missing something, but whatever the case, it's off my play list. |
