On first thought, the idea of The Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Danny Boy," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head"), and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life--and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track, Cash's own "The Man Comes Around," filled with frightening images of Armageddon, the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life," you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. (This special 2003 version includes a bonus DVD with the music video for "Hurt.") --Alanna Nash

| From the strong, driving guitar accompaniment to Johnny Cash's admittedly frayed, aged voice singing of Armeggedon, quoting directly from the Bible, this song grabs you and leaves you wondering and thinking, and more than a little shaken. The entire album seems to be autobiographical. Johnny's reflections on his spiritual beliefs, his fight with drug addiction, his deep love for his wife, June Carter, his love OF the American West, and his final assurance that "We'll Meet Again", are all here. The John Lennon/Paul McCartney favourite "In My Life" seems to speak for Johnny. It brings tears to your eyes. Honest tears from an honest album.
Also sold alongside this album is Mark Romanek's dvd of the Nine Inch Nails' song "Hurt". The first time I watched this dvd, and saw Cash, old, his eyes clouded by Glaucoma, his voice revealing the ravages of time and the hard life he had led, saw the camera pan across the opulent room in his house where the dvd was made to focus on June Carter standing watching him, an immense sadness and tenderness in her eyes, I just sat in front of the tv and sobbed. I can't watch that dvd without the tears flowing. It flashes back on Cash when he was a young, healthy, very handsome man, showing him hopping a freight train, walking around his boyhood home near Dyess, Arkansas, shows that same home surrounded by floodwaters, shows him and June in concert together, shows them as the proud new parents of their son, John Carter Cash - in short, visits Cash's life at different times and stages. And it ends with the aged, ill Cash, singing the words, "If I could start again, in another time and place, I would keep myself, I would find a way." If you've heard the cd but not seen the dvd, you need to, by all means. The cd and dvd are "bookends" with the life of Johnny Cash in between. Entirely memorable! |

| | Ha! I was just listening to this album three days ago and bought it over three years ago. That should be a sign of how awesome it is. The american album series of covers, I think, was a great way for Johnny Cash to end his career with. You can hear a song once, then hear it done again by Johnny Cash and it immediately becomes that much better. Must own. |

| | This is an incredibly moving recording of the voice of a man looking back on his life. His voice is gravelly and tremulous and sometimes makes you flinch ('Bridge Over Troubled Waters'), but his rendition of 'Hurt', 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', 'We'll Meet Again' and other songs carries the wisdom & insight, pain & weariness of a life lived to the full over seventy + years. The guitar and piano instrumentals play as smoothly as a well-maintained vintage engine and support the vocals without 'screaming look at me do this riff'. This is not a CD for those who worship youth, beauty and a strong beat but it offers much to people who ponder the purpose of life and take stock of what they've done. As the saying goes, old age ain't no place for cissies. |
| The Man Comes Around: An Apropos Title | 2008-08-14 | 5 / 5 |
| | It's true what many have said about this album, that Cash takes the songs and makes them his own. They don't feel like covers at all, even though the songs are familiar, especially for young people and baby boomers, with songs like "Hurt," "Personal Jesus," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I would definitely share this album with those who appreciate Johnny Cash--young and old alike. The songs are haunting and introspective. They seem to convey an underlying awareness of human mortality and vulnerability, yet their power and clarity is derived from this sense. This feeling is what remains with the listener long after the listening. |
