Ella Fitzgerald's voice was satin to Louis Armstrong's sandpaper, but when you put them together on a single song, their chemistry was unimpeachable. This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including their
Porgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonize much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humored roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), and they fly it like a kite.

You can't go wrong with this selection. It is a part of any good collection on american music. It is a must have. A Classic! I really can't say enough about it. I like listening to it just about any time of day. The quality is pretty good considering the age and I think it was digitally remastered to a very good level.
If you get this as one of your first in a cllection then you are on the right track. Yes I know it is a best of, which makes it difficult to add to your collection later since you already own bits and pieces of different records, but there is nothing wrong with a little repetition. That only makes each track all the more special.
Now I can not comment much on the value. You can get a lot of these recordings free off the net somewhere, and you can't argue that it injures the artists financially because they are already dead. It really just hurts some rich music executive somewhere. Ore may be the family or heirs of the musicians. Who knows. But if you get the itunes of what not then who knows where that money really goes either.
But enough of over analyzing the music industry! It's a good recording. You will not be disapplointed.

| I knew what to expect. I've heard all these tunes on the radio. It certainly helps to have such good piano with them. |

| This CD was wonderful! I previously purchased the first in this series of two, and wish more could be available. Ella Fitzgerald, in my opinion, is the greatest female singer of all times! Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting Louie Armstrong in person after a concert in the late 1950's. He was very gracious and shook my hand. I told him I really enjoyed his concert, and he replied, "Thank ya, little lady, Thank ya!"...I've never forgotten that. The album combines old favorites, along with others that I wasn't familiar with. All in all it's a grand experience to hear these two great masters together! Thank you!!! |

| Ever since my dad introduced me to the music of Ella and Louis, separately and together, over sixty years ago, they have remained musical royalty in my mind. They have so much fun together on this album that you will find yourself laughing out loud. The only thing missing from this album is SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY. But wait until you hear them doing songs from George and Ira Gershwin's PORGY & BESS. Pure bliss. |

They crete an unlikely but wonderful harmony together.
One of my fave CDs ever! |
