  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication Brazil Import

Other

Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so One Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, "Around the World," swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some unexpected twists. Ten years ago, Anthony Kiedis and company wouldn't have been comfortable doing revamped new wave ("Parallel Universe") or unpretentious ballads (the acoustic "Road Trippin'"), but such material fits Californication's extra-wide canvas. Except for a few meandering numbers that could have been excised, the Red Hot Chili Peppers succeed and regain their footing on the mountain of adrenalized funk. --Jason Josephes

Great album 5 stars, shockingly distorted mastering 1 Star, 3 is the average2010-08-093 / 5
A great album by any measure, fantastic melody, hooks and changes. John was back on guitar and showing why he never should have left. HOWEVER... This is one of the worst examples of mastering of an album you will ever hear. Some moron at the label decided that it should be an ultra loud mastering with plenty of compression. If I want a CD to sound louder, you know what, I'll just turn the volume up on my stereo and bingo! it's now louder. I was early 20's when this was released with a cheap stereo and I never really noticed how bad the mastering was. Now I'm 30+ with decent hifi gear and the sound of this album just makes you want to put both barrels in front of your face, it is sooooo distorted in the louder songs that it is nearly unlistenable. It is the sort of album (Metallica's Death Magnetic included) that when you put it on loud you start hunting around for a loose cable or maybe someone has turned the bass setting up on the amp or sub to the point that it drowns out the rest of the music, but no the album just naturally sounds like pure distortion with an absolute lack of dynamic range. Check out "loudness wars" on wiki if you want a clear explanation of what is going on on this album.
The Chili Peppers come back from the dead!2010-08-025 / 5
8 long years had passed since the Red Hot Chili Peppers released their seminal album Blood Sugar Sex Magick, and in this turbulent time period the Red Hot Chili Peppers experienced plenty of upheaval including numerous lineup changes, after guitarist John Frusciante abruptly left the band and rode the downward spiral of heroin addiction, as well as the drug problems of lead singer Anthony Kiedis. The band's outlook improved when John Frusciante decided to rejoin the band, finally beating the addiction that robbed him of a once-promising career.

The result of their work is one of the finest albums of the 90's, a critical and commercial smash. The opener "Around the World" hits hard and mixes a funky bass line with Anthony's rap/sing style. Anthony's voice sounds world's better than on previous albums, and his range is impressive, as he sings his way through a majority of the album. Songs like "Otherside" simply would not have been possible earlier in his singing career.

The album reaches its zenith with the title track "Californication," which deals with California's influence on the rest of the world, a song that may be one of the finest in the storied career of the band. John really stands out on this song with a great solo that makes the listener glad that he cleaned up and rejoined the band. "Scar Tissue" rides one of the most recognizable guitar riffs and shows why Frusciante is one of the top rock guitarists working today.

The band reminds you of where they came from with funky tracks like "Get on Top," "I Like Dirt" and "Purple Stain" that showcases Flea's bass and wouldn't be out of place on Mother's Milk or Blood Sugar Sex Magick.

In short there's really something for everyone, both old school fans and casual listeners will fall in love with the reborn Red Hot Chili Peppers, and this album really marked a turning point with the band mostly abandoning the funk/rap style for a more mature, world weary sound that would dominate on later albums.
The big Comeback2010-07-305 / 5
After experimenting with guitarist Dave Navarro On One hot Minute the RHCP come back with guitar god Mr. frusciante who's amazing talent is a strong force in the band. to me its one of my favorite albums due to its strong funk grooves and badass rock, I can listen to the album from beginning to end without a problem I Love RHCP.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4.5 on the Californication Fault Lines2010-03-144 / 5
Starting off with squalling guitars and Anthony Keidis letting loose a banshee wail, he soon launches into the first verse. Belting out "Romping and stomping 'cause I'm in my prime" with the band in full bore behind him, you can tell that, this time, they mean it. "Californiacation" was the sound of a band that was now mature but not mellowed.

John Frusciante, who'd left the band for the "One Hot Minute" album, had cleaned up and returned to the fold, and his presence is immediately felt. RHCP are in lock-step with their punk-funk rock and roll heyday, and Frusciante is the guitar gasoline to their Flea and Chad Smith's bass and drum spark-plugs. "Around The World," "Get On Top" and "I Like Dirt" pound like the band's best, while "Otherside," "Emit Remmus" and the title track boast mature songwriting.

The apex of the band's new growth comes at the end of the album. Comprised mostly of Frusciante's acoustic guitar and an unusually soulful vocal by Keidis, "Road Trippin'" is smooth and clean, a statement that not only applied to the music, but to the players themselves. Like "Knock Me Down," "Under The Bridge" and Californication's "Scar Tissue," "Road Trippin'" contemplates the RHCP past while making good on a future of creativity. I played this song over and over at the end of 1999, because it made me think that the path to the new century might be a bright one. For the Peppers, it was a way to say goodbye to a decade with one of their best albums.
They Can't Put Out a Bad Album.2009-11-275 / 5
The Chili Peppers light up the studio again on Californication. One of the few CD's I learn something new every time I listen.
