Based on her age--the Massachusetts musician turned 17 in 2006--the casual observer could be forgiven for expecting Sonya Kitchell to sound something like Brit wunderkind Joss Stone. While both women possess instruments considerably older than their years would indicate, Kitchell draws greater inspiration from blues- and jazz-oriented singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones, than soul belters like Aretha Franklin. And while she takes a lower-key approach than the electrified Raitt--Words is a mostly acoustic affair, featuring Kitchell on guitar--she's likely to appeal to a similar audience, which is to say, one that's logged more time on this earth than the artist herself. "Part of me is new and part of me is old," she sings on "Tinted Glass." Although Kitchell performs the occasional cover live (mostly jazz standards), she penned every one of these 12 tracks herself: the average artist twice her age can't claim as much. Better yet, there isn't a bad one in the bunch, though the titles can be pretty pedestrian ("Words," "Think of You," etc.). But it's the wistful songs, the supple voice, and the swinging instrumental passages that count, especially on "Let Me Go," the soulful, scat-bedecked CD opener. A crack backing band--with Miro Sprague on piano and Hammond B-3 organ a particular standout--helps to make Words Came Back to Me one of the year's most noteworthy debuts. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Hailed by the LA Times as a "fascinating performer," Kitchell (just sixteen) has already built a formidable reputation both as a performer and recording artist. This collection of twelve original songs, penned by Kitchell, represents a stunning debut by a remarkable young artist, blending pop, jazz, folk and blues into a thing of soulful beauty. Sonya has been selected as the Hear Music Debut artist for 2006, which will make "Words" simultaneously available at each of the 5,500 Starbucks locations in the US and Canada.

International pressing of the debut album from Sonya Kitchell, an 18-year old singer, guitarist and songwriter from western Massachusetts featuring two bonus tracks. 'Alone I Swim' and 'Clara/Little Brother'. The album represents a dazzling debut by a remarkable young artist, blending Pop, Jazz, Folk and Blues into a thing of soulful beauty. Recorded when Sonya was just 16, the album is an understated, largely acoustic affair, seamlessly melding elements of Jazz, R&B, Folk and other roots forms in a song-serving, rather than genre-adhering, way. There is undeniable warmth and wholesomeness to Kitchell's dusky alto, but just as evident is a knowingness that is both ageless and timeless. Universal. 2007.

Debut Album from the 16-year-old Singer/Songwriter. Produced by Steve Addabbo. Includes Two Tracks Not on the USA Version: "Alone I Swim" and "Clara/Little Brother".

    A fantastic voice and a great album2008-09-065 / 5
I highly recommend this album. Sonya has a unique voice and all the tracks are worth listening to. I will refrain from comparing Sonya to anyone else and just say she has a style that I think is better than most popular female singers today.
    Hauntingly beautiful.2008-01-285 / 5
We were watching Private Practice and heard the haunting lyrics of "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind". It took several weeks for us to track down the name of the artist (Sonya Kitchell)from the Private Practice website. We knew if anyone had this it would be and sure enough there it was. The entire CD is a wonderful addition to our collection.
    A vocalist for a more mature audience.2007-12-155 / 5
Norah Jones and Joss Stone comparisons aside, I don't see why people are labeling the poor girl before she ever gets the chance to define herself.
Vocally she's brilliant, a very composed and a gifted singer. I see some reviews saying she needs "experience" to make her a better songwriter but since when do we start blaming the youth for being inexperience? It comes with the territory, if you want to criticize her for being yound and inexperienced then that says a lot about how you judge people.

Lyrically she's fine, nothing deserving less than 3-4 stars. And vocally, the only people who should be complaining are the ones who cannot and do not appreciate her style. If you're among them, then walk away, don't give artists you cannot appreciate bad ratings because you don't like their kind of music. That's the same unfair bias that has givin rap such a bad image, if you don't like rap, there isn't a single rapper in the world who can make you like it, fair enough?
    Needs Songwriting2007-12-113 / 5
I think that Ms. Kitchell will be singing songs for a very long time. My complaint centers around the songwriting ... it needs some help. I love her voice, but the songs are mundane. Perhaps it is because she is so young. Still, the CD is worth a listen as there are a few songs that break out of the mundane. I don't know why someone in the music industry has not suggested some help from a songwriter. Keep singing, Sonya!

Sonya Kitchell played at the North Sea Jazz Fetival this summer(2007). She was absolutely phenomenal, and so was her band. They played so tighly together and clearly enjoyed themselves. Her pianist is a genius too. There hung an atmosphere of sensitivity and collaboration. She has a unique style with a warm intonation and a voice with suspense. Yes, suspense! She sometimes speaks as if reading a poem in rhythm,to flow the next second into singing. One could hear a pin drop at the North Sea Jazz Festival! Keep Going Sonya!
