Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection
Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists.

This is raw, unedited acoustic bliss.
If you love music and REALLY GOOD recordings..the stuff that makes you feel like you're sitting a few inches away from the musicians, this is an album that should be underneath your pillow at night. Elating in almost every fashion, this will take you to those musical clouds the almighty sits on.
Really folks, don't pass this hidden treasure (literally) up. It's a no-regret buy. |

What a corroboration between Grisman, Garcia and Rice. An absolute gem. To think it was almost lost to the world. The short conversations between some of the songs are just as precious as the songs / jams themselves. If you are a fan of David, Jerry or Tony, a must have - amazing that it is not more well know. Totally uplifting. Just incredible jams and pickin' . Only sad that Jerry is no longer with us.

| Some people just dont get it. This was not recorded for us. It was never intended for release. It was friends, rather talented friends, having fun while leaving the egos at the door. There are warts, but that is the charm. The "banter" that some talk about make it interesting for fans of these men. It is not a bluegrass album. Not all of Tony's albums/songs are strictly bluegrass. Most people know this. One made the insightful observance that Tony doesnt sing at all on this. He leaves out the fact that Tony's voice had been out of commision for several years when this was recorded. (as it is at the time of this posting) David released this because there were so many copies on the black market due to Jerry's tape being stolen by a pizza delivery man: hence the name of the album. If you buy the album, take it for what it is: a good time by some excellent musicians. There are some really great moments. |

These recordings really highlight the talent of these three musicians individually and as a whole. I've been listening to the Old And In The Way albums for years and just recently heard about The Pizza Tapes. I'm glad I added it to my collection the small talk and improptu riffs between tracks makes me feel like I was right there in the room with them.
Thanks pizza delivery boy! |
